Pet Licenses Bring Pets Home and Save You a FineExcepts from an article entitled, "Pet Licenses Bring Pets Home and Save You a Fine" published April 30, 2009 on the City of Edmonton website June 28th, 2009 The City of Edmonton wants to remind people in the city that pet licenses are used so lost pets found by the City can be returned to their owners. “We estimate that there are still over 100,000 unlicensed pets in Edmonton,” says John Wilson, Director of Complaints and Investigations for the City of Edmonton. “When these animals get lost and come to our facility, we have no way to track down their owners, leaving thousands of cats and dogs homeless every year. It’s a real problem.” Last year, 7,887 cats and dogs were found by the City, but only 2,618 could be returned to their owners. Most of the unclaimed animals did not have a pet license and, after a 3-10 day holding period, were sent to the Edmonton Humane Society and other groups for adoption. Pet licences are available online and getting one only takes a few minutes. Fees from pet licenses help feed, shelter and provide medical care for approximately 8,000 lost pets each year, and also help find new homes for many of the pets that go unclaimed. All dogs and cats six months and older must have a licence. The fine for not having one is $250.
